Released as the replacement for the iPhone SE 3, the iPhone 16e has much in common externally with the iPhone 14 but loses MagSafe and gains USB-C. It has a higher resolution (albeit single lens) camera, and an "Action" button. Internally. It has more in common with the iPhone 16, with the A18 4Ghz processor (with one fewer GPU core), but loses 5G, Wi-Fi 7 and Thread networking support but gains better battery life.

All iPhone 16e models have a haptic-touch capable 6.1" (diagonal) Super Retina XDR display (2532x1170, 460 ppi) that occupies nearly the entire front of the device. It has two cameras, one front and one back. On the front tucked in the notch is a True Depth camera that in addition to supporting Face ID, takes 12 megapixel photos, and shoots 4K video. The rear camera, advertised as a 2-in-1 camera system has a single 4K capable 48 megapixel "Fusion" camera that supports both 24 and 48 megapixel photos.

Internally, the iPhone 16e is powered by a 4.0 GHz "Apple A18" processor with six cores (two performance cores and four efficiency cores) as well as a 4-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. It has 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of flash storage. It supports 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 with 2x2 MIMO, 5G wireless, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC for Apple Pay, Crash Detection, and Emergency SOS via satellite.
Apple estimates that the iPhone 16e provides up to 90 hours of audio playback, 26 hours of video playback, and 21 hours of streamed video playback.
